Santarém is a city located on the right bank of the Tagus River, and is head of the Santarém Municipality in Portugal. The city is at a distance of 80 km North of Lisbon (capital of Portugal) and 250 km South of Porto (second most important city in Portugal).

The Municipality of Santarém, head of district of Santarém, is formed of 28 parishes, has a population of 63563 inhabitants (data from the 2001 census) on an area of almost 600 km2.

The city itself has a population of 28760 inhabitants, an area of approximately 29 km2, and a population density of 991,7 inhab./ km2.

Santarém is the most important urban core of the sub-region of Lezíria do Tejo, and has a strong link with the main urban area of the country – Lisbon Metropolitan Area.
